Peppermint chocolate is the flavor I most enjoy during the holidays. However, you don’t have to wreck your gut while enjoying the flavors of this festive time of year. These healthy homemade marshmallows without any corn syrup are perfect served on top of a warm cup of hot chocolate or hot cacao, whichever you prefer.
What makes these homemade marshmallows with no corn syrup so special over traditional marshmallows?
Well, for starters, the ingredients I chose for this recipe are all meant to help support a healthy gut and relieve some digestive issue you might have. Traditional marshmallows are usually made using corn syrup, but mine is made with no corn syrup. I don’t do that processed crap. My version contains health boosting beneficial ingredients and is made from maple syrup as the sweetener, making this a no-refined sugar, no corn syrup homemade marshmallows recipe.
Gut Healing Marshmallow Ingredients:
Hight quality grass fed gelatin is impressive for helping support and improve gut health and digestion. You may have heard of bone broth, and the impressive gut healing ingredient is gelatin. Gelatin is a wonderful source of glycine, glutamic acid, and proline. These amino acids are the building blocks of protein.
The standard American diet tends to reach for animal protein in muscle meats, rather than foods rich in collagen and glycine, such as skin, tendons, whole fish, and cartilage. Muscle meats are low in glycine, but high in methionine. In short, there is evidence that consuming higher amounts of methionine can raise homocysteine levels. Elevated homocysteine levels have been linked to heart disease.
We want a healthy, balanced diet, one properly balanced with two important amino acids, glycine and methionine. Neither should be demonized. Both hold their own important roles within our body. Glycine is wonderful in keeping stable blood sugar levels, and methionine has been shown to help prevent fatty liver disease. However, most Americans are not getting adequate glycine in our diets.
Bone broth and grass-fed gelatin are rich in glycine. So, you get an anti-inflammatory treat loaded with gut-healing amino acids full of glycine that helps support tissue regeneration, especially in the gut lining. I like to use Vital Proteins Beef Gelatin for this recipe.
Leaky Gut Revive Powder
Dr. Amy Myers, Leaky Gut Revive powder is perfect for this recipe because it’s unsweetened, no flavoring. Not only does it have marshmallow root powder, but also elm bark powder, aloe vera leaf powder, and L-Glutamine. I have discussed how these ingredients all help individuals with gut health issues, such as leaky gut or celiac disease. You can either use plain marshmallow root powder or this Leaky Gut Revive powder for the gut healing benefits. Of course, this is optional. If you prefer to make these homemade marshmallows without them. I love the addition of this because of the extra gut healing properties they add to this healthy snack.
Marshmallow Root Powder:
Marshmallow root powder is one of my favorite gut healing supplements that I aim to add to many recipes. You may have never heard of this gut healing herb before, but it has many digestive health benefits. It is an anti-inflammatory herb known for helping support gastrointestinal, lung, gut, and digestive health. Wherever inflammation is present, you need recovery in that particular area. In short, if you have inflammation, you have problems with healing within the body. This root supports healthy digestion by providing a mucilage coating that helps soothe and moisten the gut lining.
So, if you want to help support the natural healing of the leaky gut, this is the herb to choose. In fact, the original Latin name, Althaea, means “to heal”. Below is a picture of the Althaea plant. This herb is known for its protective properties, as well as being a demulcent. This means it helps increase mucus production, especially the gut and lungs. As the gut lining repairs, your body will begin to produce its own healing amount of mucus in the lining of your gut.
How much marshmallow root should you take for leaky gut?
To help restore your gut naturally, it’s best to proceed with the functional medicine 4R program. Remove, restore, reinoculate, and repair. So, when it comes to healing the gut naturally, there are many herbs and nutrients needed to help support the body in the healing process. Experts recommend 1-2 teaspoons of powdered marshmallow for cold and cough, and reduction in phlegm.
However, to help ease intestinal permeability associated with leaky gut, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Crohn’s 6 grams of marshmallow is suggested. There is no exact amount. How much you take depends on how leaky your gut is, and what other foods are in the formula for leaky gut. You can try adding more or less of the marshmallow root.
Easy Homemade Gut Healthy Marshmallow Recipe (Peppermint)
- 1 cup filtered water, divided into 1/2 cup portions
- 3 tablespoons grass-fed gelatin powder, unflavored (I like Vital Protein’s Beef Gelatin).
- 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup maple syrup or honey
- Pinch of sea salt
- Optional: 1 tablespoon of marshmallow root powder or Leaky Gut Revive powder (1 scoop).
- Combine the gelatin and only 1/2 cup of water into a stand alone mixer, and gently whisk until well combined. Don’t beat it during this step. Simply allow it to bloom and set aside.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, place the other 1/2 cup of water with the maple syrup or honey. Bring to a gentle boil. Then reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.
- To the bloomed gelatin, slowly add in the maple syrup mixture while whisking on low speed. Add in the peppermint and vanilla extracts, pinch of sea salt.
- Next on the high speed setting of your mixture, beat for 10 minutes until the mixture looks like marshmallow fluffy clouds of deliciousness.
- Line a 9″ by 9″ pan with parchment paper. Spray the parchment paper with non-stick cooking spray. You can sprinkle the pan with some powdered sugar and arrowroot directly on the parchment paper to keep the marshmallows from being too sticky. This is important if you want to use these homemade marshmallows with no corn syrup for roasting later on.
- Pour the marshmallow mixture into the baking dish, spreading it evenly. Place into the refrigerator to set for at least 3-5 hours or best overnight.
- After the marshmallows have set up overnight, slice them into squares. Then you either serve as is or top with crushed candy canes, confectioner’s sugar, and a drizzle of melted chocolate or raw cacao nibs.

You can make a plain version of these marshmallows without the peppermint extract and omitting the crushed peppermint candy canes and chocolate drizzle. Simply omit the peppermint extract and double the vanilla extract. Then you have an easy plain version of homemade marshmallows.

Tip: You might want to know how to quickly fix sticky marshmallows. So, after slicing the marshmallows, you can toss with arrowroot powder to help cut down on the stickiness factor, which makes storing them easier. In addition, you can spray some cooking oil on your hands when handling them for packaging, storing, or adding to other recipes.
How to Store Homemade Gut Healthy Marshmallows?
How long will my easy homemade marshmallows keep? I suggest you store your homemade gut healthy marshmallows in an airtight container at room temperature. They should last 2-3 days on your countertop.
Can You Freeze Homemade Marshmallows?
Marshmallows can be frozen by placing them in a reusable freezer bag or an airtight container. They will last for up to six months. Thaw the marshmallows before using. This is an excellent way to ensure you have them on hand when you want to add to that cup of delicious hot cocoa, or when visitors stop by during the busy holiday season.
Is a Stand Mixer Required for Making Homemade Marshmallows Recipe?
Nope. That’s the short answer, but it definitely helps. It can be done the old fashioned way with a hand beater and time. It will take considerable time to whisk your way to fluffy marshmallows. I highly suggest using either a stand mixer or at least an electric hand held one.
