🍪 A Classic Cookie Made Gluten-Free
When was the last time you slowed down and really enjoyed a cookie? Like, actually let it be enough. OK, back to the cookie details!
Oatmeal raisin cookies are one of those classic cookies that just don't need much changing. Kind of perfect as they are.
Chewy oats, plump sweet raisins, a sprinkle of vanilla and cinnamon. This combination has been around for quite a while for good reason. This classic cookie has stood the test of time.
In this version, I kept everything people love about a traditional oatmeal raisin cookie (like the way they look) and simply just changed one thing: certified gluten-free oats and gluten-free flour.
You can double the batch and freeze ahead for school lunches or after school treats. And who wouldn't love having the option of a warm, oatmeal raisin cookie after scraping the ice off your windshield after a long day at work? 😊
Why You'll Love These Gluten-Free Oatmeal Raisin Cookies?
In addition to the delicious taste, here's why we think you'll love this recipe.
- Soft + Chewy - With a chewy center and slightly crispy edges, these gluten-free oatmeal raisin cookies are just that: chewy oatmeal raisin cookies.
- Wholesome - There is no mixing gluten-free flours or hard-to-find ingredients to make the recipe work. The gluten-free flour I use is a one-to-one blend you can find at most grocery stores. It's as simple as that!
- Classic Flavor - Cinnamon and plump raisins make these the perfect go-to oatmeal cookie ever.
- Freeze Ahead - Eat half and bake half or freeze baked cookies for another day.
- Nostalgic - The best of the best oatmeal cookie recipes. Familiar, delicious, and just like grandma used to make.
This cookie recipe fits beautifully into your Harmony Method, and brings together that comforting warmth and cinnamon spice we all crave during this season.
🩺 Health Benefits Of Key Ingredients
Let's explore why this soft and chewy cookie recipe can best support your health and wellness goals.
Gluten-Free Certified Oats
We're talking about simple, old-fashioned rolled oats. Organic if you like. Just make sure they're gluten-free if that's important for you. Just a note, since oats usually come into contact with wheat products, if you're making these cookies for somebody like myself with a celiac condition, be sure to use certified gluten-free oats!
Gluten-Free Flour
A quality gluten-free flour blend is what gives these cookies their soft, tender structure without any gluten. We like King Arthur's Gluten-Free Measure for Measure Flour, since it's designed as a 1:1 substitute for regular flour, so you don't have to fuss with special ratios or add extra binders. It also has a neutral flavor that lets the cinnamon, vanilla, oats, and raisins shine through, and it blends smoothly into the dough for a consistent texture in every cookie.
Avocado Oil
Avocado oil provides the fat needed for a soft, tender cookie without using butter. Its mild, neutral flavor allows the cinnamon, vanilla, oats, and raisins to remain the stars of the recipe. It also makes these oatmeal raisin cookies naturally dairy-free.
Raisins
Raisins bring natural sweetness and a chewy texture to every bite, which means you can rely a little less on added sugar. They're also a source of fiber and contain antioxidants, along with naturally occurring potassium. For the best flavor and texture, look for plump, moist raisins. But, if yours are on the drier side, soaking them in warm water for about 10 minutes before adding them to the dough can help.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon adds warm, cozy flavor to these cookies while offering more than just taste. It's rich in antioxidants and has been studied for its potential to help support healthy blood sugar levels already within a normal range. A little goes a long way, so even a modest amount adds noticeable depth to the overall flavor.
Vanilla Extract
Vanilla extract rounds out the flavor profile, adding warmth and a subtle sweetness that ties the oats, cinnamon, and raisins together. Look for pure vanilla extract rather than imitation vanilla for the best, most authentic flavor.
🥣 Ingredients You'll Need
These easy to make oatmeal cookies only require a few on hand pantry staples.
- Gluten-Free Certified Oats - Oats are a natural superfood because they are 100% whole grain, and contain many vitamins and minerals. I like Bob's Red Mill brand of rolled oats because it is handled in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
- Gluten-Free Flour - I like using King Arthur's 1:1 all-purpose gluten-free flour blend.
- Cinnamon - Cinnamon gives those cookies an aroma of coziness that goes perfectly with oats and raisins.
- Baking Soda - For spreading the cookies on the baking sheet and for the slight crispness on the edges.
- Fine Sea Salt - Every cookie needs a touch of salt to balance out all the sweetness. But mostly, it really does help to enhance all the other flavors in the cookie, especially vanilla and cinnamon!
- Avocado Oil - I used avocado oil so the cookies not only stay fresh longer than if I used butter, but they also aren't greasy because of the avocado oil. You'll get chewy cookies with soft centers, like the best oatmeal raisin cookies should be!
- Light Brown Sugar - The combination of moisture, caramel-like flavor, and chewiness really makes light brown sugar ideal for these soft oatmeal cookies. If you need a substitute for any reason, coconut sugar lightly packed will work, but the cookies will turn out slightly darker and a bit less soft.
- Egg - The egg in these cookies absorbs some moisture to soften and holds everything together.
- Vanilla Extract - To help round out and balance all the other flavors.
- Raisins - They are a must and give you those little pockets of sweetness and chewiness all at the same time. Our favorite part!
Optional Ingredients
- Chopped Walnuts or Pecans - To add some great crunch and variation in flavor. Also adds a helpful touch of bitterness to contrast the oats and really raise the overall level of the cookies.
Optional Boosters
- Collagen Peptides - An easy way to add protein while supporting skin, hair, nail, and joint health.
- Chia Seeds - Add fiber, omega-3 fats, and a fun texture while helping support fullness and digestive health. If you add in chia seeds, be sure to adjust the liquids. You will need to add more to account for the swelling of the chia seeds.

👩🍳 Directions: How To Make Chewy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies?
These easy, gluten-free cookies come together in just a few simple steps and is perfect for a nourishing dessert that feels both comforting and functional.
Step 1: Prep the Oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: Combine the Dry Ingredients
Whisk together the gluten-free flour, oats, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.
Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk the avocado oil and brown sugar until well combined. Add the egg and vanilla and whisk again until smooth.
Step 4: Make the Dough
Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined. Fold in the raisins and optional nuts.
Step 5: Chill
Chill the dough for 30 minutes. I'd increase the chill time from 20 minutes because avocado oil is liquid and the extra chilling helps control spreading.
Step 6: Scoop + Bake
Scoop about 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie onto the prepared baking sheet. Gently flatten slightly.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the edges look set and lightly golden while the centers remain soft.
Step 7: Cool
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
These simple, chewy oatmeal raisin cookies are one recipe that you will continue to make throughout the baking season and beyond.
⭐️ Pro Nutrition Tip
Don't skip the chilling step direction. Because I used avocado oil instead of butter, the dough will be a bit softer to work with if you don't chill the dough first. This allows the oats and flour time to absorb that extra moisture, so you get chewier cookies rather than risk your cookie dough spreading out too thin.

These oats are the best tasting and are also minimally processed. If you are looking for lasting energy for your morning breakfast or a healthy addition to your fav cookie recipe, this is the I recommend.
💙 Substitutions
Customize these oatmeal raisin cookies to your taste preferences, pantry staples, or dietary needs with these simple swaps.
- Avocado Oil → Butter or Dairy-Free Butter: If you prefer you can use that as your fat source instead. Use ½ cup unsalted and softened butter instead.
- Brown Sugar → Coconut Sugar: Substitute 1:1. Expect a slightly deeper color and a bit different texture.
- Rolled Oats → Quick Oats: Quick oats can be substituted, however it will result in a softer, less hearty oat texture.
- Raisins → Dried Cranberries: Swap them 1:1 for a different tart-sweet twist.
- Walnuts → Pecans: Either nut works well.
- Nuts → No Nuts: You can leave the nuts out. The basic recipe I provide is with no nuts.

- Slightly warm them up and enjoy with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
- Upgrade the nutrition by pairing with a bowl of tangy Greek yogurt for added protein.
- Try washing them down with a cold glass of your favorite milk.

❄️ Storage
- Room Temperature - The cookies keep well in a sealed container for 4-5 days. Refrigerator - If you prefer a firmer texture, store the cookies in the fridge for up to a week.
- Freezer - The cookies also freeze well for up to 2 months.
- Freeze The Dough - For ready-to-bake style cookies, portion scoops of the cookie dough out and freeze the dough portions until solid on a parchment paper-lined tray. Pop them off the paper and into a ziptop bag in the freezer. The cookie dough will keep for up to 2 months.
- For Chilled Cookie Dough - Using a cookie scoop, transfer the cookie dough from the freezer to the baking tray. No need to thaw first! It might need a couple of extra minutes to bake.
If you're working with a cookie dough that tends to spread a lot during baking, especially with gluten-free recipes, chilling helps the cookies keep their shape. For these cookies, we didn't chill the dough, but you can!
This is a perfect Harmony Prep Method™ dessert recipe to rotate into your weekly routine.

🤔 FAQ - Common Questions
These FAQs should help address any common concerns or questions you may have about making this oatmeal raisin cookie recipe.
Are Oatmeal Raisin Cookies Gluten-Free?
Traditional oatmeal raisin cookies typically aren't gluten-free as they're made with wheat flour; these gluten-free oatmeal raisin cookies are made with gluten-free flour and oats! Look for certified gluten-free oats.
Are Oats Naturally Gluten-Free?
While oats don't contain any wheat gluten, they can be cross-contacted with gluten-containing grains during growing and processing. If you're avoiding gluten, be sure to use oats that are specifically labeled certified gluten-free.
Why Do I Need To Chill The Cookie Dough?
Chilling allows the gluten-free flour and oats to absorb even more moisture, preventing excessive spreading in the oven.
Can I skip chilling the dough?
You can, but the cookies won't hold their shape quite as well.
Are these dairy-free?
Yes, these are dairy-free because I used avocado oil instead of traditional butter. If you prefer, you can swap in a dairy-free butter. I suggest using ½ cup of butter of choice.
Can I use quick oats instead of rolled oats?
Absolutely, but the rolled oats will result in that traditional chewy texture that you are used. to.
Can I freeze the oatmeal raisin cookie dough ahead of time?
Yes, check out the notes above. I suggest sectioning out the dough into individual cookie-sized balls before freezing. This will make it easy to quickly bake off.
Why are my gluten-free cookies so crumbly?
The directions for my gluten-free cookies ensure they don't wind up crumbly. However for other gluten-free recipes that you want to modify, be sure to let your cookies cool on the baking sheet before moving them. Gluten-free cookies will firm up as they cool down. And check to make sure your gluten-free flour contains xantham gum.
