This was inspired by my peanut butter protein bliss balls recipe, and pairs well with this healthy chocolate milkshake recipe.

🥣 Ingredients Chocolate Date Balls

To make these healthy date balls, you will simply need to gather a few key ingredients that create the best tasting chocolate brownie bites.

1. Raw Cacao Powder - Great source of antioxidants with a delicious chocolate flavor.
2. Chocolate Protein Powder - Packed full of protein, this vegan protein powder is perfect for increasing your protein intake.
3. Gluten-Free Rolled Oats - Oats are a natural super food because they are 100% whole grain, and contain many vitamins and minerals.
4. Nut Butter - I like to use peanut or almond butter in these protein brownie bites, but sunflower seed works well if you have a nut allergy.
5. Medjool Dates - The natural sweetness of dates is a great swap for refined sugar.
6. Milk of Choice - I prefer non-dairy milk and use unsweetened almond milk, but any milk will work well.

See the recipe card for quantities.

🍫 Health Benefits of Raw Cacao Powder

Raw cacao is known for its impressive health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that help fight oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Raw cacao also contains various minerals, such as magnesium, iron, potassium, and calcium, which are essential for the body's functions.

It's a natural mood enhancer, as it boosts the production of endorphins and serotonin, which can improve mood and fend off depression.

Additionally, raw cacao has been found to improve cardiovascular health by helping reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and may help protect nerve cells from damage.

Raw Cacao Is Great For Better Moods

Raw cacao, derived from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree, is not only prized for its role as the primary ingredient in chocolate, but has also garnered attention for its potential mood-enhancing properties.

Unlike its processed counterpart, raw cacao is minimally treated and remains rich in natural compounds, some of which are believed to positively influence the human mood.

Raw Cacao and Flavonoids

One of the primary mood-boosting components found in raw cacao is a group of phytochemicals known as flavonoids. These compounds exhibit antioxidant properties and have been linked to the promotion of brain health.

Regular consumption of flavonoid-rich foods like raw cacao has been associated with reduced risk of neurodegenerative conditions and improved cognitive functions, including better mood regulation.

Furthermore, cacao contains a significant amount of tryptophan, an essential amino acid that serves as a precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter commonly referred to as the "feel-good hormone," due to its central role in regulating mood, happiness, and anxiety. By providing the building blocks for serotonin synthesis, the tryptophan in raw cacao may help enhance feelings of well-being and contentment.

Raw cacao also features a compound known as phenylethylamine (PEA), which has been linked to elevated mood and increased focus and alertness. PEA is a natural compound that can stimulate the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that contribute to a positive mood and an overall sense of happiness.

Raw Cacao and Mental Clarity Benefits

Additionally, cacao contains small quantities of caffeine and theobromine, both of which have stimulating effects on the central nervous system. These substances can improve mental clarity and energy levels, potentially translating into a more uplifted mood for some individuals.

It's important to note that while raw cacao contains mood-enhancing properties, its effects can vary from person to person. Factors such as individual biochemistry, the amount of cacao consumed, and the presence of other dietary components can all influence mood.

In conclusion, the mood-enhancing effects of raw cacao are supported by several bioactive compounds. Its consumption may contribute to a positive mood through various biochemical pathways, including boosting brain health, providing precursors to neurotransmitters, and offering a mild stimulant effect.

💙 Substitutions

Making chocolate brownie protein bites your own unique way is important to your own dietary preferences or restrictions. Here are a few easy substitutions for your healthy date balls recipe.

• Vegan - Use a vegan protein powder and plant-based milk option.
• Raw Cacao Powder - Swap with your favorite unsweetened cocoa powder, like in my healthy chocolate pudding recipe.
• Paleo & Whole 30 Compliant- Swap out the oats for 1 cup of your favorite nut. I like walnuts because it pairs well with the chocolate flavor of these date balls.

❄️ Storage

Store any leftover healthy date balls in an airtight container in the fridge for 1 week.

You can freeze your chocolate date balls for up to 3 months. I suggest removing from the freezer about 5 minutes before eating. This allows them to soften and thaw out. This recipe is the perfect healthy snack recipe to take on the go.
